Character Name: Beast
Series: Beauty and the Beast
Character History: Then go ahead and STARVE!
Character Canon Point: Just after the "Something There" sequence
Personality: When we first meet Beast, he's selfish, unkind, and cruel, traits which haven't lessened over the ten years since he's been cursed. He was first cursed by refusing entry to his castle to an old hag who turned out to be a beautiful enchantress in disguise, so when an old man appears asking for shelter, one would think he'd have learned his lesson and behave civilly, if not kindly. He does not. Instead, he flies into a rage, terrifies the old man, and locks him away. When Belle appears, he shows off his stubbornness as well, unwilling to budge to let her father leave until she promises to stay with him.
While at first all that is seen are his worst qualities, including acting like a spoiled child throwing a temper tantrum when Belle refuses to eat a meal with him, it soon becomes apparent that under the rage and anger is also fear and loathing. He's afraid of the curse becoming permanent, turning him into a monster that will forget all about his human life and turn into a truly evil beast. He already sees himself as such, thinking there's a good reason Belle will never love him.
Again, his rage and anger get the better of him when Belle enters his quarters without permission. While he doesn't physically harm her, he comes close, destroying furniture with single swipes of his paws even as she asks him to stop, and roaring at her to get out. Immediately afterwards, he's contrite, but it's too late. Belle flees the castle and its unstable master. Then Beast commits the first truly altruistic act he's done in a long, long time. He follows Belle and defends her from the wolves, taking injury, and ultimately exhausting himself to the point where he collapses in the snow. When she takes him back to the castle and nurses his wounds, he tries to yell and intimidate her again, the way that he's always done with everyone around him. It doesn't work this time, for she yells right back, and is the first person to ever tell him he needs to learn to control his temper. He takes this to heart, realizing that the only person holding Beast back from becoming a better person and turning back into a human is himself.
He grows to care for Belle and realizes that there's more to life than screaming out orders and throwing tantrums to get what he wants. Her kindness inspires his own, giving her a library, and trying to have better manners. At the current point, Belle has been living with him long enough to loosen him up a little. He's learned to be more gentle and kind, not just with her but with everyone around him. He can also take a joke, whereas before he'd fly into a rage if anyone did something like throw a snowball in his face. He's falling hard for Belle, and while it isn't quite love yet, it's getting there. This has allowed him to become more gentle and kind, the qualities that will eventually make Belle fall in love with him. While he's still got a long way to do in growing up, he's no longer stunted as the spoiled young prince who turned away an old woman in a snowstorm.
Abilities: Being a mish-mash of animals that stands over eight feet tall, Beast has strength and speed far greater than that of a human being. He's able to catch up to Belle when she's fleeing on Phillipe in the middle of a snowstorm when they have a significant head-start and flings around grey wolves, each of which can weigh up to 180 pounds, like they are puppies. That being said, he's not an experienced fighter, and Gaston, who has much more experience hunting and fighting creatures of his size, is able to easily hold his own for a time against Beast when they get into a fight. He's slightly more durable than human beings, causing his injuries to be lessened and allowing him heal slightly faster.
He's also got enhanced sense, mainly his sense of smell and hearing, allowing him to find Maurice first being in his castle by scent rather than by sight, and allowing him to track down Belle in both the original movie and sequels when she leaves the castle. He also has sharp claws and fangs, even if he rarely uses them.
Six Items: The enchanted rose under glass, the enchanted mirror, Sultan the dog-turned-footstool, this outfit, this outfit, and this outfit.
Character Samples:
Sample 1: Beast on the beach!
Sample 2: [There's a lot of grumbling as the audio starts. Beast is hardly going to show himself off to the populace at large right off the bat, given his startling appearance. That's a good way for people to turn up with the torches and pitchforks. There's a lot of muttering in his deep, growly voice.]
No--No--No! That's not right-- Maybe if I-- Oh da--
[And the audio cuts out. It's restored a few minutes later and this time he at least seems to be certain he's recording.]
I was wondering if anyone here is familiar at all with magic and curses?
[Might as well get a general sense of what everyone here thinks about the subject before he decides to reveal himself as a big, possibly scary monster.]
